It’s no news that Apple has been the source of great innovation. From the invent of the first Macintosh computer to the ubiquitous iphone, Apple has changed the way we work, live, and play. Yet just recently, Steve Wozniak – one of the two Steves behind Apple – has announced that there is a new Apple in town, and it’s not his company.
Wozniak is betting that Tesla, and its CEO Elon Musk, will be the source of the next, great innovation.
“I think Tesla is on the best direction right now. They’ve put an awful lot of effort into very risky things,” Wozniak said. “They started with a car—the Tesla Model S—that made little sense in engineering terms in how much you have to build for what price and what the market will be.”
Like Apple, Tesla started with a product that may not have made sense from an engineering standpoint, yet it was precisely the kind of car that Musk, himself, wanted to drive. And as Wozniak points out, it is just that type rugged innovation that creates the businesses that drive great innovation.
As Wozniak explains, “It was really built for Elon’s own life. What car would he like? And when things come from yourself, knowing what you’d like very much and being in control of it… .that’s when you get the best products.”
And now with Tesla’s new solar roof, they are again changing the game. Not just does Musk promise that the roof will be no more expensive than a traditional roof and provide all the solar energy needed to completely power a home, but also never need replacing. In fact, all Tesla roofs come with an infinity – yes, you read that right – warranty.
So you wouldn’t be alone if you were asking: Will Apple and Tesla work together some day? Many have already suggested a collaboration. Yet, it is not likely any time soon. This next revolution belongs only to Tesla.
